ASAMI India Basic Ilizarov Course Report

The ASAMI India Basic Ilizarov Course, held in the historic city of Jodhpur, witnessed enthusiastic participation from delegates across the country. Hosted under the aegis of ASAMI India in collaboration with the Limb Reconstruction Society of Rajasthan, the course was conducted over two days and was attended by over 100 orthopaedic surgeons, postgraduates, and trainees.

Faculty Excellence

A distinguished panel of national faculty, led by Dr. Mangal Parihar (Course Director and Vice President, ASAMI India), included eminent names such as Dr. P. N. Vasudevan, Dr. D. S. Meena, Dr. Amar Soni, Dr. Ravi Chauhan, and many others from different regions of India. The faculty brought diverse expertise, enriching the academic depth of the course.

Scientific Program Highlights

The course was structured to build foundational knowledge in Ilizarov principles, covering:

Day 1:

• Lectures on biology of distraction osteogenesis, biomechanics of the Ilizarov system, and instrumentation.
• Hands-on workshops on wire-passing techniques, frame pre-construction, mid-shaft tibial fracture applications, and corticotomy.
• Discussions on Ilizarov applications in fracture management, complemented by surgical video demonstrations.

Day 2:

• Case-based lectures on non-unions and infection management.
• Workshops on bone transport frames and the use of mono lateral fixators (LRS).
• Demonstrations on Alfa frames for tibia and femur, followed by discussions on post-operative care and complications.
• The course concluded with a demo of the DeftFix system and an interactive Q&A session.

Conclusion

The course successfully met its objectives of teaching the "Science behind the Magic of Ilizarov" through interactive lectures and practical sessions. It fostered hands-on learning, academic networking, and deepened the understanding of limb reconstruction among attendees. The warm hospitality and vibrant culture of Jodhpur added to the memorable experience for all participants.
